ARCHIVE 81: CASSANDRA WALL
ARCHIVE 81 is a NETFLIX thriller series set in NYC across 2022, 1994, and 1924. The show draws tonal and visual inspiration from seminal horror and thriller films of the twentieth century- films like REAR WINDOW, ROSEMARY’S BABY, THE TENANT, EYES OF VERONICA MARS, THE CONVERSATION, and VIDEODROME.
The character Cassandra Wall (Kristin Griffith) is a tenant of the mysterious Visser apartment building in the 1990s and a high ranking member of the paranormal cult at the heart of ARCHIVE 81. The primary costume inspiration for the character is culture/fashion icon, Diana Vreeland due to he striking, patrician, and commanding nature of Vreeland’s personal style.
In the 1920s timeline of the show, the cult leader is Iris Vos (Georgina Haig). To draw connections across the timelines, the two leaders wear similar fabrics. Cassandra wears a 1990s appropriate Issey Miyake pleated dress and jacket. In the same episode, Iris wears a 1920s appropriate Fortuny pleated dress in similar tones.
